BIOgraphy
My name is Zach Hertz and I was born in Billings, MT on September 7, 2006. My parents are Jason and Krista Hertz and I have one older brother, Jon. I started playing hockey at a very young age as I was just a few months old when my older brother first started playing. You could say I was a rink rat as I was often seen with a mini hockey stick, walking around in skates with skate guards, and challenging any older kid I could to a good game of knee hockey. I was fortunate to have a good coach at a younger age who helped me develop a strong hockey sense and encouraged me to pursue my goals. I played for the Billings Bulls and Team Montana youth teams through 13 years of age. Midway through my 14 year I began playing for the Colorado Rampage U14AAA. I knew that if I wanted to pursue my goals for hockey that I needed to leave Montana and find a program that would help me develop as a player and athlete over the next few years. I just completed the 2022/23 season with the Colorado Rampage U16AAA team. During the season I was an assistant captain, first line defense, and played on all PK and PP opportunities. Beyond hockey, I am a sophomore at Village High School in Colorado Springs and have a 4.05 GPA. My coursework is on track for meeting college entrance requirements. Outside of hockey and school, my family and friends are very important to me. I value spending time with those around me. My hobbies include fishing, golf, spending time outdoors, and hanging out with current and past teammates.

Scouting Report
SHOOTING
As a defenceman, Zach’s shot is good. His wrister is hard and accurate. He has the intelligence and strength to be able to read what shot has a better chance of beating the goaltender. Then when he chooses the shot, it is hard and accurate. For a defenceman, he has a way of getting shots through to the net and it creates a lot of scoring chances.
SKATING
His skating is by far his biggest strength. He is a very smooth and speedy defenceman. Zach’s footwork is amazing and he can easily transition from skating forward with the offense to then retreating back to defend. His speed makes him able to beat just about any player on the ice as well as keep up with an opposing player coming into the zone. Zach’s backward skating is also very fast and smooth as he is able to evade any defender with the puck and make a play to get the puck up the ice.
PLAYMAKING
Hertz’s playmaking is very good when it comes to setting up a rush out of his zone or making that cross-ice pass to a player waiting for a one-timer. His passes are crisp, hard, and accurate. He is also able to read that one of his teammates is picking up speed through the neutral zone and is able to make a tape-to-tape pass with ease. His ability to break up a play defensively and turn it up ice quickly is top-notch.
HOCKEY SENSE
Zach is a very intelligent defender. He reads plays with ease and knows when and where to be for a potential offensive chance. His head is always on a swivel and always knows where the opposing players are on the ice. His biggest attribute when it comes to his hockey sense is his ability to transition from offense to defense and back to defense. He is very reliable when it comes to being in an offensive rush and always being the first back to kill an opponent’s attack. He always seems to be in the right place at the right time defensively and offensively.
PHYSICALITY
Zach is a big player for his age. While he may not be the man that lays the big hit in a game, he is not afraid to use his big frame to protect the puck. He is also not afraid to get in the corner and battle with an opposing player. He likes to use his body on the penalty kill in the corner or in front of the net when clearing the opponent’s players or getting the puck off the wall. If there was one area Zach could improve it would be getting a little nastier and using his big body to disrupt plays with hits. He also will continue to grow and in the future, I can see him being a reliable feisty imposing force on the back end that no one will want to play against.

Pat Binghams Letter of Recommendation for Zach Hertz
My name is Pat Bingham and I am the Head Coach of the Colorado Rampage 16U AAA hockey team. The Rampage is a participating member of both the Colorado Amateur Hockey Association and the Tier One Elite League. I am writing this letter on behalf of Montana native Zach Hertz who is a member of our team. Zach is an outstanding individual who is self-motivated, talented and highly enthusiastic. He is a diligent and committed student-athlete who takes a positive approach to all of his duties and responsibilities. I have had the privilege to coach Zach this season and I have found his work ethic, determination and passion for the game to be exemplary. He was unanimously selected by 20 of his peers to serve as one of the Captains for our hockey team. Under his leadership, his team ranked among the top 50 AAA teams in the nation. This season Zach has proven to be an impact player on an every game basis. He has very good hockey sense, defensive tactics, compete level and offensive skill and instincts which he uses as a defenseman to join the rush and generate offense. He was a top pair defenseman for us this year, playing a significant role on our PP and PK, as well as starting every game. Zach is among the best ‘06 defensemen in the state of Colorado which garnered him attention from several junior hockey scouts watching him play in the prestigious Tier One Elite League. Zach is an outstanding young man in every aspect. He is an experienced leader with extremely strong character and ability. I understand that Zach is unable to attend the Montana State Player Development Camp, however it is my hope that based on his body of work and accomplishments to date that something can be worked out for him to attend the Northern Plains District Camp. It is with great confidence that I recommend him for exemption to the Montana State Player Development Camp.
Sincerely,
Pat Bingham
